Here you go again. "The gays", "gay central". I've never even heard of Towleroad. What is his readership versus the entire LGBT population? How the hell did you get this job? Gays do not have one universal opinion, no matter how much the tiny rich racist white gay media elite wishes it were so. And yes, Manhunt has censored every single profile that mentioned the controversy. Guess you never went back to any of the blogs, as this was mentioned over and over again in many of the articles.
Gay men are not financially obligated to put money in this man's pocket if they don't want to. And GASP! they have very wide-ranging opinions on the issue, because they are not an alien Borg race with one uniform opinion, or one single place to read about themselves and what they should be doing, listening to ,or wearing, though I'm sure it makes your job much easier to assume they do. You are so utterly clueless.
Here's another news flash: There are 6 to 10 million gay men in this country, maybe more if you include all the closet cases who are not officially gay. That leaves 5.96 to 9.96 million gays who are NOT on Manhunt at any given moment... so you can see how this story is really on the pulse of what "the gays" are concerned about!
What a ridiculously stupid commentary. Generalize much? One would think that someone writing for a pop culture magazine would have a clue that gay people are not one giant amorphous blob with an identical opinion. In fact, in reality all of us have only one thing in common with each other at root: everything else is up for grabs.
What is OUT's circulation again? I've never even read it before. Nobody asked me what my favorite music is. I guess they are as much to blame for the way they choose to portray a 'community' as you are. The gay community and culture includes everyone who is gay, period. Not just the gay society queens who run the crappy magazines that most gay people don't read. It includes gay POC's, and Gay Republicans and gay POC Republicans and everything in between.
This survey of best albums is nothing more than a survey of OUT reader's taste: a miniscule fraction of the gay community. To represent it as anything else, especially with such a sweeping generalization, is irresponsible and stupid.
Yes, there is racism in the gay community. Some gays were raised that way, just as some straight people were. Because, DUH, gay people exist in every segment of society and come from every background. is that really so hard to understand? How can one be a writer for Radar and not be conscious of this?
It isn't just rich white gays who claim to speak for us all either: the media is to blame as well for the stereotype.
You could go a long way towards changing that by recognizing that list and publications like Out for what they are, instead of mindlessly attributing the list to the entire gay community just to grab attention with a headline. It doesn't exactly take a huge amount of critical insightfulness to notice that most gays don't agree with each other about anything, and that the majority of gay people (especially POC's, poor, disabled, elderly, rural, etc.) are completely left out of 'mainstream' gay media and don't feel like they are a part of it. Which doesn't make them any less gay. Or make their voices less important.
Wouldn't a criticism like that have been more deserving of a paycheck? Instead you choose to just propagate a stereotype. Pathetic.
