Girls Gone WildeFrom Katy Perry to Tila Tequila, girl-on-girl chic is all the rage these days. But is Lindsay Lohan the real deal? This article is from the September issue of Radar Magazine. For a risk-free issue, click here.
SHADES OF GAY Will Lindsay Lohan and her BFF Samantha Ronson become the Ellen and Anne of their generation? (Photo: Getty Images) "You could throw me in the prison cell / Shackle me up against the rail," went a typical lyric, "But time and time again / My faith won't fail." Hudson enjoyed moderate success on the Jesus-rock circuit, but it wasn't until she filled out her training bra, changed her name to Katy Perry, and found Satan that she really hit it big. In early June, Perry's single "I Kissed a Girl" dashed up the charts to become a Billboard No. 1 hit and iTunes' most downloaded song. In the video for this breezy confection, which drew more than 2 million viewers in its first two weeks on MySpace, Perry—now a 23-year-old with a heaving chest and a head of glossy chestnut beauty-queen curls—writhes suggestively on a bed. She's wearing a gold minidress and stroking a kitten (wink, wink). In the breakdown she rocks out with a troupe of Pussycat Doll–esque backup dancers, crooning about how her same-sex make-out session "felt so wrong," and, inevitably, "so right." While the song may have shocked Perry's former Christian fans—to say nothing of her parents, who, the singer has admitted, "think I'm going to hell"—Perry and her team were clearly on to something. These days kissing a girl (and liking it) is all the rage. In February, the New York Post's Page Six was practically frothing at the mouth over Scarlett Johansson and Penelope Cruz, who, the column breathlessly announced, had filmed a "steamy lesbian sex scene" for Woody Allen's forthcoming film Vicky Cristina Barcelona. As an inside source had it, the two "go at it in a red-tinted photography darkroom." In May Us Weekly noted that starlet Lindsay Lohan and her "close friend," 31-year-old hipster DJ Samantha Ronson (daughter of socialite Ann Dexter-Jones and stepdaughter of Foreigner's Mick Jones), were photographed kissing, nuzzling, and holding hands on Diddy's yacht off Cannes. SHE KISSED A GIRL Katy Perry Sure, Lindsay wasn't in college, but that didn't stop the media from wondering if she was the next big bi thing or just "lesbian until graduation." The same month, the beat went on, as actresses Sara Ramirez and Brooke Smith shared a lingering lip-lock on the season finale of Grey's Anatomy. Then came the July cover of W magazine, on which a naked Kate Moss did some femme-friendly nuzzling of her own, slipping under the covers with fellow models Daria Werbowy and Lara Stone for fashion photographer Bruce Weber. A few weeks later, Page Six reported on the "sapphic bliss" of socialites Courtenay Semel and Casey Johnson, noting that they were "canoodling at Paris Hilton's housewarming party." And who can forget "career bisexual" Tila Tequila, who stormed MTV's airwaves with a second, nauseating season of A Shot at Love. In one episode, two lesbians and a straight man compete for Tequila's affections in a condom blow-up race, the goal of which is to see who can look most like a professional porn star while dry-humping a foot-operated air pump. In the end, a lesbian from San Diego won the heat. It was sweet, really. |
