The Breaks

Classic hip-hop images from 1982 to 1990

This week sees the release of The Breaks: Stylin' and Profilin' 1982–1990 (powerHouse Books), a collection of portraits by British photographer Janette Beckman. Beckman arrived in New York at the moment that hip-hop was about to burst loose into popular culture, and the book is a document of that transformation. The photos in this gallery include shots of the Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Slick Rick, Busta Rhymes, and others.
