Magazines Feeling The Pinch

nymag_cover.jpg
Just how tight are things getting in the wonderful world of print magazines? Well, Portfolio (a magazine that itself is rumored to be in trouble) has confirmed that Hearst is shuttering Cosmogirl. Cosmogirl.com will remain a Web destination, while the magazine's subscriber base will be folded into Seventeen's. A funny bit of minutiae: publisher Vicki Wellington will become publisher of something called Food Network Magazine, set to roll out in 2009. Evidently, the only way to launch a print product these days is to tie it to a TV network that already has a built-in ad network! (Whether the Food Network Magazine will be able to take advantage of its biggest star Rachael Ray remains to be seen, as Ray already has her own magazine.)

And then there's the case of New York magazine's 40th Anniversary Party, which is tonight at Hammerstein Ballroom. The National and Grizzly Bear are playing! Tickets for the general public are $35 to $100, and staffers are being offered a 70 percent discount, which seems pretty fair. However, some people are annoyed they have to pay at all! "People aren't mad, they're just incredulous," says one staffer. "We just have never had to pay for parties before. I mean it's not like they make us pay for the Christmas party, and that's open bar."

(Still, this employee, like most, are forking over the dough and attending anyway.)

Asked whether or not this was the result of the current recession, a New York spokesperson said, "We were pleased to be able to offer staffers tickets at a significant discount for tonight's concert, which many have taken advantage of. This is not a staff party but a concert for the general public, and with more than 300 employees our company is simply too big to be able to offer everyone complimentary tickets."

[And what about Radar, you ask? (And why wouldn't you ask? It's a perfectly logical question!) I'm happy to tell you that we're doing just fine! Why, I put $437 worth of alcohol on my T&E report this month. It sailed right through, no problem! And it wasn't even disguised as "writer meeting" or anything, the itemization line read "Old Crow: Personal Consumption." Things could not be going any better.—Ed.]

Print is dead. Hit the lights on your way out.
