< BACK TO Fresh Intelligence Dave Chappelle's Unannounced Performance
LATE SHIFT Chapelle (Photo: Money, Cash, Ho's) The comedian, who famously walked out on a $50 million deal with Comedy Central after just two seasons of his hit Chappelle's Show, took the stage at approximately 12:30 a.m. and didn't leave until club management turned off the lights at 4:20 a.m., witnesses tell Radar. Chapelle's free-association "set," throughout which he chain-smoked, mainly consisted of mimicking characters he'd cast in a hypothetical puppet show staged between the "curtains of Britney Spears' vagina" and talking about the time he was riding his bike while on mushrooms in Bermuda and saw Carl Lewis jogging by (which he seemingly found hilarious because, you know, what else would you expect Carl Lewis to be doing?). Chappelle made time to aggressively hit on the female audience members, too, though not all that seriously—his wife was in attendance. Mrs. Chapelle clearly has a sense of humor: Dave also said that the first time they had sex he was so drunk he pissed the bed, which he jokingly played off as a test to see how "freaky" she was. Chappelle, who no longer drinks, seemed lucid and in control of his words. Sadly, this doesn't make a resurrection of Chappelle's Show any more likely: he said he's yet to talk to writing partner Neal Brennan since the two had a falling out after Chappelle up and left for South Africa without telling him. Amateur yucksters? Really?! I guess you've never been to the Comedy Cellar, then. They don't allow amateurs on the bill there. Which of these stand-ups on the bill tonight at the Cellar strike you as amateur yucksters, exactly? Darrell Hammond, Kevin Brennan (Neal's brother!), Elon Gold, Robert Kelly, Dan Naturman, Sherrod Small, Dave Attell and Godfrey are all there tonight. Who knows, maybe Chappelle, too. Posted by: thecomicscomic on January 22, 2008 1:49 PM For some reason I get the feeling that "thecomicscomic" has a vested interest in the Comedy Cellar. Posted by: moneycashhos on January 22, 2008 1:59 PM ....a vested interest in the comedy cellar and a strange unfamiliarity with the concept of humour. Posted by: slinkimalinki on January 22, 2008 3:17 PM Nope. No vested interest in the Cellar. But I do care a lot about comedy. If you took a look at my site for more than two seconds, you'd figure that out. And for slinkimalinki, does your concept of humour extend to Ricky Gervais? Because I've written about and talked to him, too. Or is he another "amateur yuckster" in your eyes? http://thecomicscomic.typepad.com/ Posted by: thecomicscomic on January 22, 2008 7:41 PM Advertisement Actually, upon further reflection, that picture doesn't look like it was taken at the Comedy Cellar, but at the nearby Comedy Village (formerly known as the Boston Comedy Club). moneycashhos? If you were at the Comedy Village, where Chappelle has been known to drop in also from time to time, then you probably did sit through more than a few amateurs.
